Safety

MISB is committed to conducting all business activities in a manner that will safeguard the health and safety of its employees and persons affected by our activities, and that effectively protects the environment. Our goal is to achieve and maintain Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) performance excellence, as measured by our customers, industry peers, government regulators and our own internal targets.

Our constant HSE Goals are:

  • No harm to people
  • No damage to the environment
  • Effective control of all identifiable risks

All levels of management are responsible and held accountable for providing leadership, visible commitment, direction and resources to meet our identified HSE performance targets. All employees, sub-contractors and others engaged by MISB share the responsibility to work in a manner that will protect themselves, fellow employees, the public and our environment from harm.

Compliance with all applicable government HSE regulations is considered the minimum acceptance standard of HSE performance. MISB holds the following certifications:

MISB Safety | COR We maintain COR (Certificate of Recognition) certification, a national standard for occupational health and safety accreditation, with the goal of reducing incidents, accidents and injuries. We undertake yearly internal audits by our registered auditor, and hold dedicated COR safety meetings every two months.
MISB Safety | ISNetworld MISB is recognized with a green light in all areas from ISNetworld, a contractor management standardization tool that measures safety, insurance coverage, quality standards, and regulatory compliance.
MISB Safety | ComplyWorks We are also in good standing with ComplyWorks, another contractor management platform, for similar measurements.
MISB Safety | CSAM We have accommodation from the Construction Safety Association of Manitoba (CSAM) for improvement and care of our employees, and we are audited on an annual basis.

At MISB, all training is safety training.

Supervisors are responsible for ensuring that we maintain a safe work environment, that employees are adequately trained and that our HSE policies and procedures are fairly and consistently enforced. All new staff are provided with safety training during orientation before beginning work. This includes training for emergency preparedness, fire extinguisher use, WHMIS, safe work practices and safe job procedures, as well as any specific tool use. Safety training is refreshed yearly or as required. Skilled labourers undergo certified testing where they must pass theoretical and practical examinations in order to operate equipment. Staff visiting client sites also have required and current clearances including CSTS-09 and banned substances testing.

MISB has a dedicated, nationally certified construction safety officer, who is covered under all provincial jurisdictions. He conducts weekly safety meetings, and checks in on new hire progress with compliance to safety policies.

MISB is a leader in safety in our community, with other organizations coming to our facility to undergo safety training. We also sit on the West Region Safety Committee, the lead safety body for all trades in Manitoba, to share our knowledge and learn from other organizations.

We seek to continuously improve HSE performance and exceed industry best practices. Active support of this policy is a condition of employment and an expectation of all with whom we do business.
